Colonia is a popular day trip or weekend destination for tourists and Buenos Aires locals alike. It is historic town with a captivating atmosphere and charm.
After short ferry ride across the Rio de la Plata, you may visit Argentina's neighbor, Uruguay.
Portugal officially returned Nova Colonia do Sacramento (founded in 1680 by Manoel Lobo) to Spain in 1750, but its Portuguese settlers resisted.
Meanwhile, Colonia was established as a prime smuggling center, exploited primarily by the British, while the Spanish were busy building up the strength and size of their colony in Buenos Aires.
The Spanish took again possession in 1777. Colonia is, only 110 miles (180km) west of Montevideo 32 miles from Buenos Aires .
After arriving at ferry terminal we will head to the old town walking the old cobblestone streets where you ´ll find a blend of colonial history, museums, gift, pottery and jewelry shops.
